Hello, fabulous community of writers and creatives,
I totally understand how daunting it can be to figure out what to share in a newsletter, particularly when we want to forge a real connection with our readers but are wary of coming across as too pushy or sales-driven.
That's why today, I'm thrilled to share a strategy that feels genuine, personal, and focused entirely on the aspects of our books that often capture our hearts first: our characters.
Characters: The Heartbeat of Our Stories
Our characters are the heartbeat of our stories. They live, they love, they overcome challenges, and they connect with our readers on a deep, emotional level. Introducing these characters to our readers through our newsletters can be a powerful way to build that connection, share our enthusiasm, and invite our readers into the world we’ve created.
Subtle Book Promotion Through Character Connection
By delving deep into your characters' lives and sharing their stories with your readers, you’re not just fostering a sense of community; you’re also subtly promoting your books in the most natural and engaging way possible.
When we share our characters’ struggles, victories, and intimate moments, we’re essentially giving our readers a sneak peek into the world we’ve created. We’re showcasing the depth, emotion, and relatability of our stories without directly saying, “Buy my book.” Instead, we’re saying, “Meet these incredible individuals I’ve created. Aren’t they fascinating?”
Creating a Buzz Around Your Characters
This approach creates a buzz around your characters and, by extension, your books. Readers become invested in finding out what happens to these characters next. They want to know if they overcome their challenges, find love, or achieve their dreams. And the only way to satisfy this curiosity? Reading your book.
As authors, our goal is to transform interest into desire. We want our readers to go from being curious about our characters to feeling like they need to know their whole story. And when that shift happens, they’re no longer just newsletter subscribers; they’re potential readers, ready to make a purchase.
The Magic of Word of Mouth
Moreover, when readers fall in love with your characters before even opening your book, they’re likely to talk about it. They’ll share their excitement with friends, family, and fellow readers, generating word-of-mouth promotion that’s worth its weight in gold. All this happens organically, without a single sales pitch from you.
In essence, by making your characters the stars of your newsletters, you’re turning character introduction into a powerful and authentic promotional tool. You’re selling without selling, allowing your stories and characters to speak for themselves and draw readers in. And in today's world, where readers crave authenticity and connection, this approach is not just effective; it’s essential.
An Example to Guide You
I’d love to share an example from my own newsletter, where I introduced my readers to Alistair, a character from my first book…
Hey lunar lovely,
I hope you’re doing awesome and soaking in all the good vibes (and great reads)! It’s Emma here, and I just couldn’t wait to pop into your inbox today with a little teaser from my latest book, Flirting with Darkness.
🌪️ Meet Alistair: A Storm of Passion and Protection
I wanted to give you an exclusive sneak peek into one of the most captivating characters in the story – Alistair. Oh boy, where do I even start? This man is a tempest, a storm of emotions with a heart as intense as his nature.
As Lyra’s royal guard, Alistair is the embodiment of strength and devotion. He’s sworn to protect our princess with everything he has, but trust me, their connection? It’s so much more than just duty.
Alistair and Lyra’s journey is one filled with electric tension, whispered secrets, and moments that will leave you breathless. As their fates entwine, you’ll find yourself wondering – can love truly conquer all? Is their bond strong enough to withstand the storms?
Here's a snippet from the book
Alistair placed a hand on my arm gently. "Just be careful," he said, his voice tinged with worry. "I don't want to see you get into any trouble."
Isabella nudged me playfully, winking at me. "I think Alistair just doesn't want any suitors to get too close to you tonight."
Alistair's gaze swept over me again. "You do look stunning," he murmured, his voice husky.
Our eyes locked for a moment, and I felt a flush of warmth spread across my cheeks. I averted my gaze for a moment, suddenly feeling self-conscious under his intense scrutiny. "Thank you," I managed to reply, my voice slightly breathless.
Isabella, sensing the growing intensity between us, took a step back with a knowing smile. "Well, I'll leave you two to it then," she said, a hint of mischief in her tone. "Don't let me keep you from your... conversation."
As she left the room, the air seemed to crackle with tension, and I found myself drawn closer to Alistair, my heart pounding in my chest.
He closed the gap between us, each step amplifying a tension that seemed to thrum in the air. "You always manage to surprise me, Lyra," he murmured. The words hung heavy, imbued with a warmth he quickly stifled, as if holding back a secret he dared not share. "I never know what to expect from you."
I raised an eyebrow, mustering the bravado to meet his gaze again. "Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"
He chuckled softly, the sound sending a thrill through me. "Definitely a good thing," he replied, his silver eyes locking onto mine. "You're full of surprises, and it's... intriguing."
Thanks a ton for letting me share a bit of the magic with you today. Can’t wait for you to meet Alistair and get lost in the world of Flirting with Darkness!
hugs & happy reading,
Emma
Why This Works
By focusing on Alistair, his qualities, and a graphic of him, I’m sharing my genuine enthusiasm for my character without directly selling my book. It’s a subtle invitation for readers to learn more if they feel connected to Alistair. This approach feels personal, authentic, and centered around storytelling rather than selling.
Your Turn: Share the Love for Your Characters
So, my fellow writers, I encourage you to dive deep into the hearts of your characters. Share them with your readers. Talk about why you love them, what challenges they face, and why their stories are worth telling.
Your readers subscribed to your newsletter because they’re interested in you and your work.
They want to hear about your creative process, the characters you’ve crafted, and the worlds you’ve built. Sharing your characters is a beautiful way to do this, establishing a connection without the need for a sales pitch.
Let’s transform our newsletters into spaces of storytelling and genuine connection, one character introduction at a time.
Happy writing, and even happier character sharing!
Ella
